For BYU Hawaii, I had the opportunity to interview Carly, who provided amazing responses for student interested in BYU Hawaii! I recommend you check out her responses! Thank you so much Carly! - Dayanna

What makes this school so special to you? Was it your first choice and your dream school?

"Yeah BYU-Hawaii was my first choice! I initially wanted to go for the chance to live in Hawaii, but the reason I have stayed is because of the amazing student body. When I applied. I knew absolutely no one at the school but making friends was so easy, which is something that I actually struggled with in high school. There’s a warm and welcoming atmosphere at the school that makes you feel at home. Our campus is also very diverse, which is important to me, and there are over 70 countries represented. I’ve made friends from Mexico, Norway, Tonga, and many other places around the world."

How would you describe the weather at BYU Hawaii? Does it frequently snow? What would advise students to bring when coming to BYU Hawaii?

"While Hawaii stays warm throughout the year, during the winter it is very wet and rainy, so I  would recommend bringing a rain jacket and a couple of sweaters/hoodies for cooler days. For other clothing, students should keep in mind there is a fairly strict dress code on campus so planning cute, light summer-weather outfits can take some planning but isn’t too hard!"

What was your reaction when you opened your acceptance letter?

"I was excited! Though BYU Hawaii was my first choice, it was also the hardest one to get in out of the other schools I had applied to, so there was a feeling of being surprised as well haha!"

What kind of classes would you highly recommend students to take in high school before going off to college?

"If your school offers concurrent enrollment either through the college you’re going to or another one, take those classes!! This is so important. Many high schools now offer classes for college credit for things like English, biology, math, etc. Find out what general requirements there are for the college(s) you want to go to, and then see if you can take these in high school at an extremely discounted rate."
